Fernando Botero
(Medellín, Colombia, 1932) Colombian painter and sculptor. Fernando Botero graduated in 1950 from the Lyceum of the University of Antioquia, located in his hometown. Later he traveled to Spain to study the great masters of Spanish painting (especially Goya and Velázquez).
His first works of portraits, landscapes, and costumbrist scenes were made with very loose brushstrokes, which would progressively be pasted, while both the perspective and the figures became arbitrary. In the early 1960s, Fernando Botero settled in New York, where his paintings earned him considerable popularity in the American art market.
In the 1980s, Fernando Botero became one of the most sought-after living artists in the world, and some of his sculptures made of bronze, marble and cast resin (Woman on horseback, Dog, La corrida, etc.) became an integral part of the urban landscape of many cities.
